Apple Shrunken Skull Challenge

Are you looking for a spooky fun science idea for your little ones? Join our apple shrunken skull carving challenge to create the right amount of creepy ambiance this Halloween season. It’s a fun way to incorporate art and science into a homeschool or school STEAM curriculum. Kids can design their own 'skull' and learn more about food preservation, bacteria, and even enzymes!
 
And, they make a great addition to a party punch for classrooms or your own Halloween shin-dig. Want to give it a try? Follow along!

Materials Needed
  • Apples
  • 1 cup lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • Carving knife
  • Bowl

Step One

Grab your bowl and begin pouring your lemon juice into it.

Step Two

Pour the salt into the lemon juice and combine by stirring it around.

Step Three

Grab your apples (as many as you like) and begin peeling them.

Step Four

Take a pencil and draw your skull design. Don't forget to make it creepy.

Step Five

Begin carving along the lines of your design. Don't worry if the apples start to brown, it's completely normal! Once you are done, set aside.

Step Six

Begin putting your apples into the bowl of juice. Let them soak for 20 minutes.

Done! Just 'beware' that it will take a few days for them to completely dry! These fun crafty decorations will last for a long time without the need for refrigeration.
